History

Basil’s Bar was founded in 1976 with the infamous Basil Charles at the helm. Over the years Basil’s became the watering hole on island and the place to be for a party. Basil’s Bar welcomed everyone from locals to royalty and rockstars and became an indispensable part of island life on Mustique.

Basil’s Bar is a notorious place for everybody and anybody to escape the reality of normality and let their hair down. Over the years, Basil’s has become a cult spot for music legends, featuring sets from artists such as Mick Jagger, Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams.

Since 1995, Basil’s has hosted the Mustique Blues Festival and has been privileged to witness some of the great Blues performers.

Philippe Starck Renovations

Globally revered designer and creator Philippe Starck spent two years sympathetically rebuilding Basil’s Bar, which was successfully relaunched in July 2018. Whilst conserving the bar’s essential DNA and character he has created a new bigger better Basil’s that will continue to serve as the island’s legendary meeting place. Come and see for yourselves.

“Basil’s Bar is not just a bar, it is a unique place, full of history and heritage. A place of community and shared memories, with its own, genuine soul. Renewed and relaxing, with a simple elegance and its own romanticism, the rebirth of Basil’s Bar creates a new continuity in a life-long story. Like a long lost friend with whom you feel an immediate connection. Perfect for enjoying endless conversations in front of the new open kitchen or in one of the many hide-away corners. An original institution, a destination, full of life.”

“Political, ethical, subversive, ecological, fun: this is how I see my duty as a creator.” Philippe Starck
